Dr. Orup has been a practicing Orthodontist in Concord, Massachusetts since 1996. He served for over ten years on the faculty of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) as a Clinical Instructor and Lecturer in the Postdoctoral Orthodontic Program. He continues to lecture periodically at HSDM with particular focus on topics such as The Clinical Management of Ectopically Positioned Canines and Practice Management.
He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree in 1994, graduating magna cum laude from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. At Harvard, he was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. He also received awards for excellence in Oral Pathology and Operative Dentistry.
In 1996, Dr. Orup earned his Certificate in the Specialty of Orthodontics and a Master of Medical Science (MMSc) degree from Harvard. He was honored at graduation with the George B. Cadman Award for Clinical Proficiency in Orthodontics, which is awarded in recognition of clinical excellence.
During and after his dental and orthodontic training, Dr. Orup conducted in-depth research on the effects of in-utero exposure to anticonvulsant medication. This research, conducted in collaboration with the Genetics and Teratology Unit of the Massachusetts General Hospital, was published in the Journal of Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research and the Journal of Craniofacial Genetics and Developmental Biology. While pursuing his DMD degree at Harvard, he was one of two graduate students from across the University to serve a two year term on the Harvard University Advisory Committee on Shareholder Responsibility. This panel made recommendations on proxy resolutions related to the University’s investments.
Dr. Orup earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. There he was a member of the cross-country team, an officer of his fraternity, and a participant in various intramural sports.
He grew up in Northern California, where he attended Bellarmine College Preparatory High School in San Jose and was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was inducted as a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. Dr. Orup played the piano for nine years through high school, and his artistic pursuits include photography and watercolor painting. As a young adult, he founded and operated his own business teaching children and adults how to swim.
Dr. Orup and his wife, Beth, have four children and three border collies, Dash, Bolt, and Buck. Dr. Orup has dedicated time to coaching Sudbury Youth Basketball and Baseball teams. In addition, he served as a Troop Committee Member for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Sudbury Troop 60. He enjoys camping, hiking, and canoeing and has chaperoned outdoor trips with the Scouts, including High Adventure Trips such as canoeing down the Allagash River in Maine and hiking through the mountains of the BSA Philmont Ranch in New Mexico. More recently he and two of his sons summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa and he and his daughter hiked the Tour Du Mont Blanc in Europe. Other hobbies include skiing, gardening, maple sugaring, and photography.
Dr. Orup served as Treasurer of the Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics for many years. He is also a member of many professional and honorary associations, including the American Association of Orthodontists, the Northeastern Society of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society, the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, and the Harvard Odontological Society.
